Sohail Salim Abdul Rashid Khan was born on December 20, 1969, in Bombay (now Mumbai), Maharashtra, India. He is the son of renowned screenwriter Salim Khan and his wife Sushila Charak, who later adopted the name Salma Khan.

Sohail is the brother of Bollywood actors Salman Khan and Arbaaz Khan, as well as siblings Alvira Khan Agnihotri and Arpita Khan. He completed his education at St. Stanislaus High School in Bandra, Mumbai. Belonging to the Pathan (Pashtun) ethnic group, Sohail Khan practices Islam.
