He was born into a family with a strong musical background – his mother, Helen Mann, was a concert pianist, and his father, Charles Mann, sang in a barbershop quartet. Mann is the eldest of three sons, with two younger brothers named Charles Bryan Mann and Timothy Mann.

Mann graduated from Largo High School in 1969. He initially attended Jacksonville University for two years, from 1969 to 1971, before transferring to the North Carolina School of the Arts.

His mentor at the North Carolina School of the Arts was Malcolm Morrison, the former dean at The Hartt School at the University of Hartford. Mann’s ethnicity is white, and his religious beliefs are unknown.

Career

Mann made his Broadway debut in 1980 in the supporting role of Chester Lyman in the musical “Barnum” at the St. James Theatre.

His breakout performance came in the original Broadway cast of “Cats” in 1982, where he played the memorable lead role of the “playful” cat Rum Tum Tugger.

In 1985, Mann played the role of assistant choreographer Larry in the film version of A Chorus Line, directed by Richard Attenborough.

He has starred in other Broadway musicals over the years, including Rags (1986), Jerome Robbins’ Broadway (1989), Getting Away with Murder (1996), and the 2000 revival of The Rocky Horror Show, where he played Frank-N-Furter.

Mann has also contributed to film and television, appearing in shows like The Equalizer, Gargoyles, and The Tick.

His film credits include A Circle on the Cross, Eavesdrop, and The Mandala Maker. In 2009, Mann originated the role of Mal Beineke in the Chicago tryout of the musical adaptation of The Addams Family, which later transferred to Broadway.

More recently, he took over the role of Charles Frohman/Captain James Hook in the 2015 Broadway musical Finding Neverland and appeared as the “Man in the Yellow Suit” in the 2016 Broadway musical Tuck Everlasting.
