Early Life

Woodrow Tracy Harrelson, known as Woody Harrelson, was born in Midland, Texas, to his mother Diane and father Charles Voyde Harrelson. 

His upbringing was in a Presbyterian household with his two brothers, Jordan and Brett. Unfortunately, their father, Charles, was convicted of the assassination of federal judge John H. Wood Jr. in 1979 and received a life sentence for the crime. 

Woody mentioned that his father was not present much during childhood. Charles passed away in 2007 while serving his sentence at the United States Penitentiary, Administrative Maximum Facility.

Harrelson’s family faced financial struggles, depending on his mother’s income to make ends meet.

Despite their hardships, he attended Briarwood School in Houston, Texas. In 1973, Harrelson moved significantly to Lebanon, Ohio, his mother’s hometown.
