Li Bingbing was born on February 27, 1973, in Wuchang, Heilongjiang, China, to her parents, Zhang Chuan-mei and Fan Tao. She has a younger sister, Li Xue.

At 16, Li Bingbing enrolled in the Jixi Normal School, Heilongjiang University of Technology. After completing her studies there in 1992, she worked as a probationary music teacher at an elementary school in Harbin for one year.
