Early Life

Arora was born in Thane, Maharashtra, India, on October 23, 1973, to Anil Arora, a Punjabi who served in the Merchant Navy, and Joyce Polycarp, a Malyali (from Kerala) Catholic. “Malaika” means “Angel” in Swahili. Arora began dancing training at the age of four. In Thane, she attended ‘Holy Cross Convent High Institution,‘ an all-girls school. When she was age 11, her parents divorced. Her mother relocated to Borla Society in Chembur (another Mumbai suburb) with her two daughters. Arora attended Chembur’s ‘Swami Vivekanand School,‘ which was run by her aunt, Grace Polycarp. She later enrolled at ‘Jai Hind Academic‘ in Churchgate but did not complete her academic studies due to employment commitments.

Arora has always enjoyed being in front of the camera and longed to be a model. In 1998, she married Arbaaz Khan, Salman Khan’s brother. They originally met while she was filming a coffee ad for an agency; she later married him and added the surname Khan to her name, “Malaika Arora Khan,” which means “angels.”
