Early Life And Education

Oyenike “Nikki” Laoye is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. She was born on December 19, 1980, in Lagos, Nigeria. She is the only daughter of Prince Olushola Isaac Laoye and Olori Christiana Yetunde Laoye.

She has three brothers: Femi, Bola, and Ade (also known as Xblaze, a music producer and hip-hop artist). Nikki Laoye is originally from Ogun State, Nigeria.

She attended Grace Children School for primary education and graduated from Federal Government Girls College, Shagamu, in 1998 for secondary school.

She then pursued a degree in Computer Science at the University of Ibadan, where she was also a member of the gospel group Soul Sistas during her studies.

Ethnically, Nikki Laoye is of Nigerian (Yoruba) descent. She also has mixed ancestry, including European (Dutch) and Ghanaian heritage through her father. Religiously, she practices Christianity.

Career

Laoye began her music career as a solo artist in 2006 with the release of her first single, “Never Felt this Way Before.” Nigerian music producer Cobhams Asuquo produced the song. Later that year, Laoye released a hip-hop collaboration single called “Taka Sufe” featuring Rooftop Mcs and Rap2Sai.

This track helped endear her to Nigerian youth and provided a platform for her brother, Xblaze, who produced the song. Xblaze produced most songs on Laoye’s debut album and her 2013 dance single, “1-2-3.”  

In 2008, Laoye released her debut album “Angel 4 Life,” which featured a collection of contemporary sounds and collaborations with top Nigerian artists like Rooftop Mcs, Blaise, and Jeremiah Gyang.

The following year, in 2009, Laoye had the opportunity to perform alongside renowned American gospel artists Kirk Franklin, CeCe Winans, and Donnie McClurkin at The Experience Concert in Lagos, Nigeria, which drew an audience of 500,000.

That same year, she played in the Nigerian-Broadway stage play musical OLURONBI. She was one of five female artists on Nigeria’s nationwide Tetmosol Girl Power Tour. After a hiatus following the loss of her father in 2011, Laoye made a comeback to the music scene in 2013.

She is known for several hit songs, including “Never Felt This Way Before,” the 2013 dance single “1-2-3,” the soulful ballad “Only You,” which she remixed in 2016 featuring Seyi Shay, and the love song “Onyeuwaoma,” featuring Banky W. Laoye has also lent her vocal talents to radio jingles for major brands like Etisalat, MTN, and Fidelity Bank.

In addition to her musical work, Laoye has contributed to film soundtracks for major Nollywood productions such as “Bent Arrows,” “Where the Heart Lies,” “Mission 2 Nowhere,” and the ensemble film “Journey to Self.”

In January 2016, she had the honor of headlining the Butterscotch Evenings event in Lagos alongside American R&B superstar Brian McKnight. In addition to her performance career, Laoye is also dedicated to philanthropy.

In December 2010, she founded the “Angel 4 Life Foundation,” a non-governmental organization through which she mentors and helps develop the creative skills of talented, physically challenged youth. She also assists in managing the Music Therapy Clinic of Modupe Cole Home for the Physically and Mentally Challenged in Lagos.
