Early Life and Education

Margaret Ann Lipton was born on August 30, 1946, in New York City, New York, United States. She is the daughter of Harold Lipton, a corporate lawyer, and Rita Benson, an artist. Lipton attended several schools growing up, including Lawrence Junior High School and the Professional Children’s School in Manhattan, where she honed her acting skills from a young age.

Lipton has two brothers: Robert Lipton, who also became an actor, and Kenneth Lipton. She is of Ashkenazi Jewish ethnicity and practised Christianity as her religion.

Career

Peggy Lipton began her career as a model, with her father arranging her first modelling jobs in New York while her mother encouraged her to take acting lessons. At just 15 years old, Lipton became a Ford Agency model and enjoyed early success in the field. In 1964, Lipton and her family moved to Los Angeles, where she signed a contract with Universal Pictures. She made her television debut at age 19 in the NBC sitcom The John Forsythe Show in 1965.

Over the next few years, Lipton appeared in episodes of various popular television shows, including Bewitched, The Virginian, The Invaders, The Road West, The F.B.I., The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, and Mr. Novak.

However, her breakout role came in 1968 when she was cast as one of the three “hippie cops” in the counterculture crime drama The Mod Squad. Appearing vulnerable and waiflike, Lipton’s performance as the character Julie Barnes earned her four Emmy Award nominations and four Golden Globe Award nominations, ultimately winning a Golden Globe for Best TV Actress in a Drama in 1971.

After The Mod Squad ended in 1973, Lipton took a 15-year hiatus from full-time acting. She returned to television in 1988 in the ABC movie Addicted to His Love, and later regained major attention for her portrayal of Norma Jennings in David Lynch’s hit series Twin Peaks in the early 1990s. In the following decades, Lipton appeared in a number of other TV shows, including recurring roles in Crash and Popular.

In addition to her acting career, Lipton also found success as a singer. Three of her singles, including Stoney End and Lu, both written by Laura Nyro, as well as Wear Your Love Like Heaven by Donovan, charted on the Billboard charts. She also co-wrote the 1984 Frank Sinatra hit L.A. Is My Lady with her husband, legendary music producer Quincy Jones, and the Bergmans.
