Elizabeth Téa Pantaleoni was born on February 25, 1966, in New York City, United States. She is the daughter of Emily Ann (née Patterson), a dietitian and nutritionist, and her father, Anthony Pantaleoni, a corporate lawyer with Fulbright & Jaworski. Leoni has a brother named Thomas Pantaleoni.

Leoni grew up in Englewood, New Jersey, and New York City and attended two private schools: Brearley School and The Putney School in Vermont. She later participated in but did not complete her studies at Sarah Lawrence College.
