He also formed a pop-R&B group called Cartel with his friends Tim and Darragh. McFadden holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts from Fordham University in New York. He is of Irish ethnicity and practices Christianity.

Career

Brian McFadden started his music career in June 1998 when he auditioned for the Irish boy band Westlife. He was up against another blonde member, Nicky Byrne, and both joined the group alongside Kian Egan, Mark Feehily, and Shane Filan.

After joining Westlife, McFadden changed the spelling of his first name from Brian to Bryan to make it easier for fans to sign autographs. As part of Westlife, McFadden and the group were managed by music mogul Simon Cowell.

Together, they released their debut single, “Swear It Again,” in 2000, which became their first and only single to chart in the US. During his time with Westlife, the group released four Irish number-one studio albums and a number-one greatest hits album.

Before launching his solo career, McFadden co-wrote the song “If My World Stopped Turning,” which Ireland’s entry Chris Doran performed in the 2004 Eurovision Song Contest.

Following his departure from Westlife, McFadden signed with major label Sony BMG and released his debut solo single, “Real to Me,” in 2004. It became his first number-one hit single in the UK, Ireland, Denmark, and Norway.

McFadden‘s second solo single, “Irish Son,” also charted within the top 10 in the UK and Ireland. While working on his second solo album, his record label, Sony BMG, insisted he collaborate with an A&R (Artists & Repertoire) representative. This second album went on to sell over 800,000 copies worldwide.

In 2011, McFadden released the single “Just the Way You Are (Drunk at the Bar)” which was criticized by some as glorifying date rape. As a result, McFadden canceled plans for a music video, asked radio stations not to play the song, and pledged to donate all proceeds to organizations supporting rape victims.

In 2020, McFadden formed the duo Boyzlife with fellow former boyband member Keith Duffy of Boyzone. They released their debut album “Strings Attached” that year. In 2022, Boyzlife released their second album, “Old School,” which did not perform as well commercially.

Outside of his musical career, McFadden has also taken on television presenting roles. In 2008-2009, he co-hosted the Australian show “Football Superstar” and also made a guest appearance as a judge on Australian Idol in 2009. He has also done radio work, co-hosting breakfast shows in Australia in the late 2000s.
