Adams has one younger brother named Bruce Adams. As a child, Adams traveled with his parents to diplomatic postings in Lisbon, Portugal, where he attended St. Columban’s School, and Vienna, Austria, where he attended the American International School Vienna in the 1960s. He also attended a Scottish missionary school, The Tabeetha School, in Jaffa, Israel, in the early 1970s.
Raised in Ottawa, Adams attended Colonel By Secondary School in the Beacon Hill neighbourhood. He later moved to North Vancouver while his father was posted abroad and attended Argyle Secondary School and Sutherland Secondary School there. Adams is of white ethnicity and practices Christianity as his religion.
Career
Adams first became interested in music at a young age, purchasing his first electric guitar when he was 10 years old in Reading. This guitar was an Italian brand from Gherson, modeled after a Fender Stratocaster. At the age of 16, Adams left school to play in a band called “Shock” and used the funds his parents had saved for his college education to buy an Estey grand piano to experiment with.
Adams’ debut album was released when he was 20 years old. He rose to fame in North America in 1983 with his album Cuts Like a Knife, which featured the title track as well as the ballad Straight From the Heart—his first US top-ten hit that he had written at age 18. His 1984 album Reckless became the first album by a Canadian artist to be certified diamond in Canada and helped cement his status as a global star, with six charting singles including Run to You and Summer of ’69.
Adams continued his success in the late 1980s with the album Into the Fire, which included the US and Canadian top-ten song Heat of the Night. In 1991, he released the hugely popular (Everything I Do) I Do It for You, which topped the charts in over 19 countries and is one of the best-selling singles of all time, with over 15 million copies sold worldwide.
Beginning in 1993, many of Adams’ biggest hits were ballads, including the worldwide number-one or two hits Please Forgive Me, All for Love, and Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman? He has been inducted into multiple halls of fame recognizing his immense success and contributions to music.
In 2022, Adams released new versions of songs from the Pretty Woman musical on YouTube, along with a new album called Classic, featuring reworked hits. A sequel album, Classic Pt II, followed later that year.
In late 2023, Adams parted ways with his manager of 44 years and began self-managing his career. In 2024, he launched his own record label, Bad Records, and announced several new partnerships with the Canadian media company Bell Media.
