He was born to parents Joseph Angélil and Alice Angélil, who were Melkite Greek Catholic Church members. Angélil was the oldest of two children, with a younger brother, André, born in 1945.

Angélil received his education at Collège Saint-Viateur (high school) in Outremont and Collège André-Grasset (post-secondary) in Montreal. Angélil was of mixed Middle Eastern heritage. His father was of Syrian descent, and his mother was of Lebanese descent. Angélil practiced Christianity as his religion.

Career

René Angélil started his career in 1961 as a pop singer in Montreal. With childhood friends, he formed the pop-rock group Les Baronets. The band had hits in the 1960s and mostly translated English-language pop songs into French.
