Jason Joel Desrouleaux (born September 21, 1989) is a celebrated American singer, social media personality, and songwriter who is professionally known as Jason Derulo. 

He began his solo recording career in 2009 and has sold over 250 million singles worldwide. 

In the past decade, Jason Derulo has achieved eleven platinum singles – Wiggle, Talk Dirty, Want to Want Me, Trumpets, It Girl, In My Head, Ridin Solo, and Whatcha Say.

Early Life

Jason Derulo has Latin-American ancestry. He was born to Haitian parents on the 21st of September 1989. He was birthed in a public-run medical center in Miramar, Florida State. His official name is Jason Joel Desrouleaux. His mother is Jocelyne Desrouleaux, while his father is named Joel Desrouleaux. He also has a brother named Joel Desrouleaux.

Growing up, the first language Jason Derulo began speaking was Haitian Creole then he learned how to speak English. He made his foray into the music world from a young age. He began singing while in elementary school and wrote his first song at eight. As he advanced in age, he improved his songwriting skill. In his teenage years, he began receiving songwriting gigs from emerging and established artists in the American music industry. 

In his late teens, Jason Derulo landed acting roles in different theatre productions such as Ragtime and Smokey Joe’s Cafe. In 2006, he won the Grand Prize in the finale of the TV show ShowTime at the Apollo.

As a teenager, Jason Derulo wrote the song Bossy for the veteran rapper, Birdman. He also made a guest appearance on the single, showcasing his ability as a gifted vocalist. Before he began his solo recording career, he had been writing songs for many top artists in the industry. Notable mentions include Sean Diddy Combs, Lil Wayne, Sean Kingston, Danity Kane, Donnie Klang, and Cassie. He was discovered by music producer J.R. Rotem. It was J.R. Rotem who signed him to his record label Beluga Heights Records. 

When Beluga Heights Records became a part of Warner Music Group, Jason Derulo decided to become a recording artist. He soon released his debut single Whatcha Say in May 2009. The song sold over 5 million digital downloads worldwide and gained an RIAA certification of triple platinum. Whatcha Say reached number one in the United States and New Zealand. In December 2009, he released his highly-anticipated second single titled In My Head. 

Months later, he dropped his debut studio album Jason Derulo on the 2nd of March, 2010. Jason Derulo released his sophomore studio album Future History on the 16th of September, 2011. The singer’s third international album Tattoos was released on the 24th of September, 2013. The project was later repackaged as his third US album, titled Talk Dirty, and was released on the 15th of April 2014. He dropped the single Want to Want Me in 2015 and used the opportunity to announce his forthcoming album. His fourth studio album, Everything Is 4, was released on the 2nd of June, 2015. 

In June 2020, Jason Derulo collaborated with producer Jawsh 685 to record the single Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat). The song was an instant hit and went viral on social media, especially TikTok. Savage Love was later remixed by BTS, and the remix climbed to number one in the US. The song is Jason Derulo‘s second chart-topper in the region. That same year, he dropped another single, Love Not War (The Tampa Beat), featuring music producer Nuka. The single was released in November and was inspired by a 2018 SoundCloud track by Nuka. On the 3rd of September 2021, he released the single Acapulco.

In the past, Jason Derulo used to date fellow singer Jordin Sparks. The duo was in a serious relationship for three years before breaking it off in September 2014. Jason Derulo and his then-girlfriend, Jena Frumes, welcomed his first child, a son, Jason King Derulo, on the 8th of May 2021. Regrettably, the couple ended things on the 23rd of September 2021. He has three nieces.
