Lil’ Kim (born July 11, 1974), whose real name is Kimberly Denise Jones, is a gifted American rapper and reality television personality. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, she started her music career after being discovered by rapper The Notorious B.I.G.

She became famous in the late 1990s with her debut album Hard Core, which was certified double platinum by the RIAA. She has released four more studio albums and appeared on reality TV shows, such as America’s Best Dance Crew and the UK version of The Celebrity Apprentice.

Lil’ Kim is known for her provocative dress style and outspoken personality. She has been nominated for several awards, including six Grammy Awards.

Early Life & Education

Kimberly Denise Jones, popularly known as Lil’ Kim, was born in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bedford–Stuyvesant, on July 11, 1974, as the second child of a former U.S. marine Called Linwood Jones. Her mother’s name is Ruby Mae Jones. She has a brother named Christopher Jones.

Lil’ Kim attended Queen of All Saints Elementary School in Brooklyn as a child. Her parents divorced when she was nine years old, and she was raised by her father, with whom she had a tumultuous relationship. As a teenager, her father kicked her out of her house, and she began living on the streets.

Lil’ Kim also attended Sarah J. Hale Vocational High School for two and a half years. There were several of her pals there, and they would frequently skip school together. 

Since she was not completing her coursework, she decided to move to Brooklyn College Academy to complete her senior year and a half. This was the same school that fellow rappers Nas and Foxy Brown attended. 

During her teenage years, she met Christopher Wallace, a.k.a, The Notorious B.I.G., who played an important role in her personal life and musical career.

Lil’ Kim has been in several relationships throughout her life. During her teenage days, she courted Shawn Powell after meeting them at the Empire Roller Skating Rink in Brookly. The lovers got separated after Shawn Powell was arrested and sentenced to eight years of imprisonment for robbery. Although, they kept in touch via letters. They also got engaged while he was still in jail.

She met with The Notorious B.I.G. during this period and started focusing on her musical career. Later, she called off the engagement with Shawn Powel, and they went their separate ways.

In 1996, at the age of 22, Lil’ Kim reportedly got pregnant by The Notorious B.I.G. She kept the pregnancy under the radar, and afterward, she decided to terminate the pregnancy. According to reports, The Notorious B.I.G called Lil’ Kim three days before his demise, telling her how much he loved her.

In a 2010 interview with Ed Lover on Power 105, Lil’ Kim revealed that The Notorious B.I.G. assaulted her, and she described an incident where he choked her to unconsciousness. In 2017, she admitted her relationship with The Notorious B.I.G was “very violent” after Jermaine Dupri claimed that he witnessed The Notorious B.I.G pull a pistol out on Lil’ Kim.

In 1994, The Notorious B.I.G. was essential in introducing and promoting the Brooklyn-based group Junior M.A.F.I.A., which included Jones, who was 19 years old and performed under the stage name Lil’ Kim. A conspiracy was released on August 29, 1995, to mixed reviews and moderate sales, but opened at number eight on the U.S. Billboard 200 list, selling 69,000 copies in its first week.

The Notorious B.I.G. composed and ghostwrote the majority of the album’s lyrics. Conspiracy produced three big singles: Player’s Anthem, I Need You Tonight and Get Money. The conspiracy was certified gold by the RIAA on December 6, 1995. 

Player’s Anthem and Get Money were respectively awarded gold and platinum. Lil’ Kim‘s prominence as a member of Junior M.A.F.I.A. allowed her to begin a solo career quickly after the publication of the Conspiracy album, and she began working on her debut album Hard Core in late 1995.



Lil’ Kim launched her solo career after a year with Junior M.A.F.I.A. by making guest appearances on R&B records and releasing her debut album, Hard Core, which was released in November 1996. Over 5 million copies have been sold worldwide. 

The RIAA certified Hard Core as double platinum on March 14, 2001, after previously certifying it as gold on January 6, 1997, and platinum on June 3, 1997. The lead track, No Time, a collaboration with Sean Combs, topped the Billboard Hot Rap Tracks chart and was certified gold by the RIAA. 

The next release was Crush on You, a remix of the song that featured on the album Hard CoreLil’ Kim collaborated with Missy Elliott, Angie Martinez, Da Brat, and Left Eye (Lisa Lopes) of TLC on a remix of the album’s tune Not Tonight, which peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100. 

It was included in the Martin Lawrence film Nothing to Lose soundtrack, was nominated for a Grammy Award, and was certified platinum. Lil’ Kim is the first female rapper to achieve three consecutive number-one positions on the Billboard Hot Rap Tracks list.

While she has not released any songs in a while, Lil Kim‘s net worth is estimated to be $20 million. Her career began in the mid-1990s as a hip-hop group Junior M.A.F.I.A member.
