Career
Marija Naumova’s career began in 1994 when she was discovered by renowned Latvian musician Raimonds Pauls. A year later, she participated in a talent search on TV, where, although she did not win, she caught the audience’s attention.
In 1998, she performed at a concert marking the 100th anniversary of George Gershwin’s birth and began collaborating with famous Latvian musicians, one of which was recorded and released as a CD. This helped boost her career, leading to appearances at various music events, TV and radio shows, and interviews in Latvian newspapers.
Naumova released her first solo album in 1999, which was entirely in Russian. In 2000, she competed in Latvia’s national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest but came second behind the band Brainstorm. She returned in 2001 with the song “Hey Boy Follow Me,” which was the public’s favorite, although it was not selected by the expert jury.
In 2002, Naumova was finally chosen to represent Latvia at Eurovision with her song “I Wanna,” which she co-wrote and composed. Her performance won the contest, marking Latvia’s first (and only) victory at Eurovision. Despite its success, “I Wanna” did not chart highly in Latvia, even failing to reach the top 30.
Following her victory, Naumova recorded two new solo albums in 2002—one in English and one in Latvian—and toured Latvia to present them. In 2003, she co-hosted the Eurovision Song Contest with Renars Kaupers of the Latvian band Brainstorm, who had placed third in 2000.
Later that year, she released her album “On My Own,” which included songs in Latvian, French, English, and Portuguese. The album featured new compositions by Sergey Manoukyan, Ivar Must, and Andrejs Jevsjukovs.
Naumova also holds a law degree from the University of Latvia. In 2005, she was appointed as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador for Latvia.
After taking a break from music in 2012 to focus on her personal life, she returned in 2016 with the album “Uz Ilūziju Tilta”. By 2012, Naumova was living in France with her family, though she continued to travel back and forth to Latvia.
