Marko attended a music school in Kuopio, where he studied acoustic guitar, vocals, and music theory for three years. He later enrolled at the Oulunkylä Pop and Jazz Conservatory but left his studies when Tarot secured a record deal. Hietala is of Finnish ethnicity, though his religious beliefs are not publicly known.

Career

Marko Hietala began his music career at the age of 15 and later moved to Kuopio to study classical guitar, vocals, and music theory in high school. In 1984, he and his brother Zachary formed the heavy metal band Tarot, initially under the name Purgatory.

By 1986, Tarot had secured a record deal and began touring. Before transitioning to full-time musicianship, Hietala worked as a live and studio sound engineer.

While touring with Tarot in 1998, Hietala met the members of Nightwish in Siilinjärvi, where they were an opening act for his band. In 2001, he officially joined Nightwish after being invited by Tuomas Holopainen and the band’s manager to fill the role of vocalist and bassist, replacing Sami Vänskä.

His first album with the band, Century Child (2002), introduced his raucous voice, which was used in duets with then-vocalist Tarja Turunen, such as their rendition of “The Phantom of the Opera.”

Hietala’s influence extended beyond vocals and bass playing. He contributed to Dark Passion Play (2007), where he sang several tracks and wrote the music for “The Islander,” in which he also played acoustic guitar.

He co-wrote “The Crow, the Owl, and the Dove” on the 2011 album Imaginaerum and frequently collaborated on the band’s covers, including Black Sabbath’s “Crazy Train” and Pink Floyd’s “High Hopes.”

In 2009, Hietala joined Sapattivuosi, a band covering Black Sabbath songs in Finnish, where he performed as a vocalist. He also joined the heavy metal supergroup HAIL! in 2010, performing with renowned artists like Ripper Owens and Andreas Kisser.

Hietala ventured into solo work with the release of his debut album Mustan Sydämen Rovio in May 2019, described as “hard prog.” In July 2023, he performed at Z7 Summer Nights Open Air in Pratteln, Switzerland, and reunited with former Nightwish vocalist Tarja Turunen to perform “The Phantom of the Opera.”

In 2024, Hietala also participated in Season 15 of the Finnish TV show Vain elämää, further cementing his legacy as a prominent figure in heavy metal and Finnish music.

In March 2024, Hietala and Turunen collaborated on the single “Left on Mars,” sparking discussions about the possibility of forming a new band. Later that year, Hietala released additional singles, including “Frankenstein’s Wife” in September and “Impatient Zero” in November, the latter coinciding with the announcement of his second solo album, Roses from the Deep, set for release on February 7, 2025.
