Career

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice first worked together in 1965 on a musical called The Likes of Us, inspired by the story of Thomas John Barnardo.

Although they produced a demo tape of the show in 1966, it failed to gain a backer at the time. The Likes of Us was not publicly performed until 2005, when it was staged at Lloyd Webber‘s Sydmonton Festival. The musical reflects Lloyd Webber‘s early influences with its traditional Broadway-style sound.

Their next collaboration was Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in 1967. Initially commissioned by a school choir director as a short cantata that retold the biblical story of Joseph, the work was eventually expanded into a full stage musical. The success of Joseph helped pave the way for their next major project, Jesus Christ Superstar.

In 1969, Lloyd Webber and Rice also wrote a song called Try It and See for the Eurovision Song Contest, though it was not selected. The song was later reworked with new lyrics to become King Herod’s Song in Jesus Christ Superstar.
