Gould’s career was hampered by injury troubles, particularly an eye injury that posed a risk of retina separation. He moved to the Newtown club in 1981, where he played under Warren Ryan’s innovative coaching. Newtown made the 1981 Grand Final that year, though they lost to Parramatta.

Gould then signed with the Canterbury club in 1983, where he was regarded as an astute ball-playing forward. He missed out on City’s Firsts selection in 1984 due to an ankle injury sustained just before the team was announced.

Gould had a successful coaching career, winning premierships with Canterbury in 1988 and Penrith in 1991. He also coached Penrith to the 1990 Grand Final.
