He went to North Miami Beach High School. He pursued undergraduate studies at Clark Atlanta University and graduated work at Florida A&M, where he earned a journalism master’s degree. Former West Indian fast bowler and captain Courtney Walsh is his brother.

Walshy Fire has been influenced by dancehall and reggae culture. His favorite reggae riddim is The Answer by the legendary producer Coxsone Dodd

In 2013, he stated: My sole purpose with this Major Lazer thing is to bring back some glory and international exposure reggae and dancehall.

Career

Walshy Fire has served as Major Lazer‘s master of ceremonies since 2012. He stated the following about his position in 2013: Diplo is essentially the selector, and I am the MC.

He chooses and mixes the records, and I am the one who stands in front of the crowd, plays the records, gives remarks that make meaning to the songs, and plays them. I keep the energy high throughout the entire set by providing the crowd with humor when the situation calls for it and emotion when it calls for it.

Walshy Fire worked on the APOCALYPSE SOON and PEACE IS THE MISSION albums by Major Lazer. He co-wrote the Chronixx song Blaze Up The Fire for the later album and also contributed vocals to the song Too Original. He helped with the production of Major Lazer‘s Know No Better EP.

Major Lazer Sound is hosted by Walshy Fire, Diplo, and Jillionaire on Apple Music’s Beats 1. He has worked with musicians from several genres, including Major Lazer, while upholding a commitment to cultural authenticity, particularly concerning Caribbean music subgenres.

Since restoring diplomatic ties, Major Lazer was the first significant American pop band to perform in Cuba on March 6, 2016.

One year following the release of Peace is the Mission, Major Lazer revealed plans to release Cold Water, a new song featuring Justin Bieber and that would serve as the first single for their upcoming album. This is a follow-up song to Lean On, which featured and has had 149 million plays on Major Lazer‘s SoundCloud and over 1.4 billion views on its original music video on YouTube.

In 2015, Walshy Fire established a record label with influences from hip-hop and Jamaica’s sound system culture. Working with Caribbean musicians and showcasing their many musical subgenres to broader audiences through live performances, pre-recorded mixes, and televised music shows have sparked the Walshy Fire Presents label concept.

He has performed sets with mashups from various genres, including reggae dancehall, roots reggae, soca, house, bass, moombahton, Latin, Afrobeat, hip-hop, and old-school R&B while holding residencies in several Miami clubs over the years. He also continues to tour the world. Walshy Fire gives sets as a part of his patented Rum & Bass concept, which combines carnival culture with dance grooves with global influences.

Mad Decent Records published Walshy Fire Presents: ABENG on June 7, 2019. He put together a unique discourse between African and Caribbean performers on tunes that included afrobeat, dancehall, soca, and electronic dance music. The goal of ABENG, according to Walshy Fire, is to make the Caribbean and Africa have a louder dialogue in the same studio or stage simultaneously.

Walshy Fire is a producer that has worked on several dancehalls, reggae, and EDM tracks. On the Jamaican musician Koffee‘s Rapture EP, which won a Grammy in the Reggae category, he co-produced the tracks Toast and Throne. Toast has appeared on television and in movies, notably Us by Jordan Peele.

Walshy Fire and Concord Music Publishing agreed to a worldwide publishing agreement in July 2019 that includes all of his previously released material. He opened Dante’s Hifi vinyl bar in Miami, Florida, in 2021.
