His son, Thomas Ravenel, also pursued a political career, serving as the South Carolina State Treasurer. Thomas resigned from office after only six months following serious legal allegations.

Ravenel began his political career in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1953 to 1959.

He switched to the Republican Party in the 1960s and was elected to the South Carolina Senate in 1980, serving until 1986.

In 1986, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing South Carolina’s 1st congressional district until 1995.

During his tenure, he focused on constituent services and rarely sponsored legislation. After leaving Congress, Ravenel was elected to the South Carolina Senate in 1996, serving until 2005.
