His father worked at a paper products plant, while his mother was a night shift cashier at a local store. He has one sibling, a younger brother named David Lacob.

Lacob pursued higher education at the University of California, Irvine, earning a bachelor’s in biological sciences in 1978.

He obtained a master’s degree in public health focusing on epidemiology from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), followed by an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He is of Jewish ethnicity and religion.

Career

Joe Lacob began his career at Kleiner Perkins in 1987, focusing on investments in life sciences, medical technology, and internet ventures.

Over his tenure, he led investments in over 50 startups, including AutoTrader.com, Align Technology, and NuVasive.

Before joining Kleiner Perkins, Lacob held executive roles at Cetus Corporation (now Chiron), FHP International, and the management consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton.

Lacob credits his epidemiology degree for providing a strong statistical foundation, which he applies to his business ventures and passion for sports.

On July 15, 2010, Lacob and a group of investors purchased the Golden State Warriors for $450 million, beating out high-profile bidders such as Oracle CEO Larry Ellison.

This acquisition required Lacob to sell his minority stake in the Boston Celtics. Lacob fired coach Mark Jackson after consecutive playoff seasons, citing organizational conflicts in a bold move.

He then hired Steve Kerr, which was a transformative decision, as Kerr’s leadership helped establish a culture of winning within the organization.

Under Lacob’s ownership, the Warriors became one of the most successful teams in NBA history. They won championships in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022 and set records for the best regular season (73-9) and most combined wins (88) in 2015-16.

The team also achieved the best postseason record (16-1) in 2016-17. Lacob’s strategic decisions, including hiring Kerr and General Manager Bob Myers, were instrumental in building a championship-caliber roster.

Despite the Warriors’ success, Lacob has faced controversy, such as his 2015 claim that the team was “light years ahead” of the rest of the NBA.

While polarizing, his forward-thinking vision and commitment to innovation have undeniably reshaped the Warriors into a dominant force in professional basketball and a model franchise both on and off the court.
