Early Life And Education
Lakshmi Niwas Mittal was born in a Marwari Hindu family on June 15, 1950, in Sadulpur, Rajasthan, India.
His parents were Mohan Lal Mittal and Usha Mittal. His father, Mohanlal Mittal, ran a steel business called Nippon Denro Ispat. Lakshmi has three siblings: Pramod Mittal, Vinod Mittal, and Seema Lohia.
Mittal’s early education occurred at Shri Daulatram Nopany Vidyalaya in Calcutta, where he studied from 1957 to 1964.
After schooling, he graduated from St. Xavier’s College, affiliated with the University of Calcutta, earning a B.Com degree with first-class honours. Belonging to a Marwari ethnic background, Mittal follows Hinduism.

Career
Lakshmi Mittal began his career in the 1970s, working in his family’s steel business. After graduating from St. Xavier’s College in Kolkata, he saw the potential to expand globally. 1976, Mittal founded PT Ispat Indo in Indonesia, marking his first major international venture.
Over time, he acquired struggling steel companies worldwide, including Trinidad and Tobago’s state-owned steelworks in 1989, which he turned profitable within a year.
In 1995, Mittal significantly acquired the Irish Steel plant for just IR£1, though it was closed in 2001. This move led to criticism, particularly for the environmental issues at the site.
