Lim Kok Wing (May 1, 1945 – June 1, 2021) was a Malaysian businessman, philanthropist, educator, and illustrator. He was the Limkokwing University of Creative Technology’s first president. He was married to Puan Sri Cecilia before he died.

Early Life

Lim was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 1945. He attended Methodist Boys School before moving on to Cochrane Road Secondary School.

Career

Lim founded Wings Creative Consultants in 1975 at the age of 29. He established the Limkokwing University of Creative Technology in Cyberjaya in 1992. He was also the organization’s president. Lim addressed the country’s Parliament in July 2007, following the founding of Limkokwing University Botswana. Limkokwing University London was established in the same year.

Limkokwing University of Creative Technology commissioned a billboard picturing Lim as “King of Africa,” flanked by a cheetah and accompanied by African students in June 2020; it was withdrawn after unfavorable online responses.

Death

Lim died on June 1, 2021, at the age of 75. He had been admitted to the hospital the week before after collapsing at home. Malaysians mourned his death, describing him as “one of the most prominent figures in the higher education sector.” At the same time, the Unesco Institute for Information Technologies in Education (IITE) called Lim a “great figure in education and philanthropy.” Mahathir Mohamad described Lim as an “avid supporter of the Malaysian vision” and “transformed the lives of many” by Najib Razak.

Awards and Nominations

Lim has garnered numerous honors for his generosity and entrepreneurship. The Malaysia Canada Business Council recognized him as CEO of the Year in 2006. The Moscow Academy of State and Municipal Management appointed him an honorary professor in 2007.
