Early Life And Education

Nasser bin Ghanim Al-Khelaifi was born in Doha, Qatar, on November 12, 1973, into a family of modest means.

His father, Ghanem Al-Khelaifi, was a pearl fisherman, while his mother’s name remains unknown. He has one known sibling, Khalid Al-Khelaifi.

Al-Khelaifi pursued higher education at Qatar University, earning a degree in Economics. He is of Qatari ethnicity and practices Islam, aligning with his cultural and religious heritage.

Career

Nasser Al-Khelaifi began his career as a professional tennis player, representing Qatar in the Davis Cup from 1992 to 2002. He played 43 matches, achieving a 12–31 record in singles and 12–16 in doubles.

Al-Khelaifi competed twice in the ATP main tour, with a career-high singles ranking of No. 995 in 2002. He also won the GCC Team Tournament.

His transition to sports administration began when he became president of the Qatar Tennis Federation in 2008 and vice president of the Asian Tennis Federation for West Asia in 2011.

In June 2011, Al-Khelaifi was appointed chairman of Qatar Sports Investments (QSi), a sovereign wealth fund focused on sports and leisure.



Under his leadership, QSi acquired Paris Saint-Germain F.C. (PSG), where he became chairman and CEO. In October 2011, he unveiled a five-year plan to transform PSG into a global football powerhouse.

While he was cleared of aggravated criminal mismanagement charges in 2020, he was fined for forging documents.

These controversies did not diminish his influence; ESPN ranked him as the seventh most influential figure in football in 2015, and France Football named him the sport’s most influential personality in 2020.

In addition to his roles in sports and media, Al-Khelaifi holds a ministerial position in the Qatari government, appointed by Sheikh Tamim in November 2013.
