In May 2002, Schabir Shaik faced legal troubles for possessing confidential minutes of President Thabo Mbeki‘s cabinet. The relationship between Shaik and Zuma came under scrutiny, revealing that Shaik had supported Zuma financially since his return from political exile in Mozambique in 1990.
