Career
Gautam Adani began his career in 1978 when he moved to Mumbai as a teenager to work as a diamond sorter for Mahendra Brothers. In 1981, his older brother Mahasukhbhai Adani invited him to manage a plastics unit in Ahmedabad.
This role marked the start of his journey into global trading, as he began importing polyvinyl chloride (PVC) for small-scale industries. Building on this experience, Adani founded Adani Exports in 1988, later renamed Adani Enterprises, which initially focused on trading agricultural and power commodities.
The liberalization of India’s economy in 1991 provided significant opportunities for Adani, allowing him to expand the business into trading metals, textiles, and agricultural products. In 1995, he secured the managerial contract for Mundra Port, which was later developed into India’s most extensive private-sector port, now known as Adani Ports & SEZ.
The company operates a vast network of ports and is the largest private multi-port operator in the country. By 1996, Adani ventured into power generation with the establishment of Adani Power, which grew to become India’s largest private thermal power producer.
Adani’s business empire continued to expand in the 21st century with notable acquisitions and ventures, including purchasing the Abbot Point Port in Australia and the Carmichael coal mine in Queensland. In 2020, he secured the world’s most significant solar bid, a project to build an 8000MW photovoltaic power plant.
His group also acquired a majority stake in Mumbai International Airport and, in 2022, purchased Ambuja Cements and its subsidiary ACC for $10.5 billion. Despite allegations of cronyism and stock manipulation, Adani’s fortune reached $54.2 billion by October 2023, securing his place among the world’s wealthiest individuals.
