Willie Gary, now 77, was born on July 12, 1947, in Eastman, Georgia, to sharecropper parents Turner and Mary Gary.

He grew up in migrant farming communities in Georgia, Florida, and the Carolinas, experiencing firsthand the challenges faced by African American families in the rural South. 

Gary’s parents instilled in him a strong work ethic and a desire for education, which led him to attend Shaw University on a football scholarship.

He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1971 and later attended North Carolina Central University School of Law, receiving his Juris Doctor degree in 1974.
