Early Life And Education
Marc Haydel Morial was born on 3 January 1958 in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States.
He is the son of Sybil Haydel Morial, a teacher and university administrator, and the late Ernest N. “Dutch” Morial, the first African American Mayor of New Orleans.
He grew up alongside his Siblings, Jacques Morial, Cheri Morial, Monique Morial, and Julie Morial.
Morial attended a Jesuit high school, receiving his diploma in 1976. He earned his B.A. in economics and African American Studies at the University of Pennsylvania in 1980.
After completing his undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1980 and receiving his Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center in 1983, Morial embarked on a distinguished career in public service and political leadership. His ethnicity is mixed African-American and he practises Christianity as his religion.
Career
Marc Morial began his career as a lawyer in New Orleans, establishing a private law practice there in 1985.
He later served as a Louisiana State Senator from 1992 to 1994, where he was Chairman of the Educational Institution Subcommittee and a member of the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus.
In 1994, Morial was elected Mayor of New Orleans, defeating Donald Mintz with 54% of the vote. At the time, he was the youngest person elected Mayor of New Orleans in 50 years and one of the youngest mayors of a major American city. As Mayor, he promised to “clean out City Hall with a shovel not a broom.”
Morial went on to serve as President of the United States Conference of Mayors from 2001-2002, where he was the chief spokesperson for America’s cities. In 2003, he was selected to head the National Urban League, a civil rights organisation.
During his tenure at the National Urban League, Morial added a new metric called the Equality Index to the organisation’s annual State of Black America report in 2004.
He has also written two nonfiction books, published speeches, written weekly newspaper columns, and published a weekly newsletter called “ReMarcs.”
In addition to his leadership roles, Morial has served in advisory positions, including Chair of the Census Advisory Committee in 2010 and President’s Advisory Council on Financial Capability from 2012-2015. President Bill Clinton also appointed him to the Twenty-First Century Workforce Commission from 1998-2000.
