Harold Shipman was a British general practitioner who graduated from Leeds University Medical School in 1970. He began his career as a doctor in Pontefract, Yorkshire, and later moved to Todmorfden.
However, in 1975, Shipman was caught forging prescriptions for the opiate pethidine, to which he had become addicted. This led to a brief stint in drug rehabilitation.
Over the following decades, Shipman systematically murdered hundreds of his patients, primarily elderly women.
He typically injected his victims with lethal doses of morphine and was adept at concealing his crimes, often forging death certificates or blaming natural causes. Concerns about the unusual number of deaths in Shipman’s practice began to arise in the 1990s.
In 1998, local authorities launched an investigation into Shipman’s practice, leading to his arrest and charge with 15 counts of murder.
He was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment. While officially convicted of 15 murders, it is believed that Shipman may have killed hundreds of patients throughout his career.
A public inquiry, known as the Shipman Inquiry, concluded that he was likely responsible for at least 215 deaths, making him one of the most prolific serial killers in modern history.
