After the split, he moved with his mother to Chicago, Illinois, where he was raised as an only child. A highly accomplished woman, she earned a Ph.D. in English and dedicated much of her career to academia, eventually becoming the chair of the English Department at Chicago State University. Her passion for education and intellectual curiosity left a lasting imprint on Kanye, who was raised as an only child after his parents divorced when he was three.

Donda played a crucial role in shaping Kanye’s confidence and ambition. She nurtured his creativity after moving with him to Chicago, always encouraging him to believe in himself. Kanye has frequently credited her with instilling a sense of fearlessness in him—a theme reflected in his music, particularly in Hey Mama, a heartfelt tribute from his 2005 album Late Registration. The song honours her sacrifices, love, and unwavering support during his early struggles as an artist.

Beyond being his mother, Donda was also Kanye’s biggest supporter and later became a key figure in his career. After retiring from academia, she took on the role of his manager, helping him navigate the complexities of the music industry.

Ray West

On the other side of Kanye West’s family tree is his father, Ray West, a man whose life has been defined by diverse and unconventional pursuits. Born in 1949, Ray was a former Black Panther, photojournalist, and entrepreneur who brought a rebellious and creative energy to the family.

During Kanye’s early years, he worked as a photographer for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, earning recognition for his compelling and socially conscious work. His artistic spirit extended beyond photography—he later dabbled in music and even opened the Good Water Store and Café in Maryland, reflecting his entrepreneurial mindset.

Though Kanye was primarily raised by his mother, Donda, Ray remained a part of his life after their divorce. While their relationship was more distant, Kanye spent summers in Atlanta with his father. Ray’s influence can be seen in Kanye’s fearless creativity and willingness to challenge conventions—traits that mirror his father’s unconventional path. In later years, Ray chose a quieter life, reportedly focusing on spiritual work and serving as a Christian counsellor.
