Kelly McGillis was raised in Los Angeles and grew up in Newport Beach, California, on July 9, 1957. She was the eldest of three daughters born to Virginia Joan (née Snell), a homemaker, and Donald Manson McGillis, a physician. McGillis attended Newport Harbor High School.

After graduating high school, she pursued her passion for acting and enrolled at the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria, California.

Later, she moved to New York City to study at the Juilliard School, where she graduated in 1983.

In terms of her personal life, McGillis has been married twice. Her first marriage was to fellow Juilliard student Boyd Black in 1979, but they divorced in 1981.
