Roger Caleb Rogerson was born in Sydney, Australia, on January 3, 1941. He was raised by his parents, Owen Rogerson and Mabel Boxley. Rogerson grew up with two siblings, Owen Rogerson and Gwen Riley. 

Rogerson attended Bankstown Central School in his early years before later going on to study at Homebush Boys High School. His ethnicity is Australian, and his religious background is Christianity.

Roger Rogerson was a Sydney police detective who gained a notorious reputation in the 1970s and 1980s for his involvement in high-profile criminal investigations and allegations of corruption and misconduct.

Rogerson was called in to assist with the investigation into the 1973 Whiskey Au Go Go nightclub fire in Brisbane after one of the accused, John Andrew Stuart, claimed that Sydney criminals were behind extortion attempts on the nightclub.

Rogerson‘s reputation allowed him to gain convictions based on “police verbals” – unsigned records of interviews with prisoners – including in the Ananda Marga conspiracy case, where the accused claimed Rogerson had fabricated their confessions.

Rogerson was awarded the Peter Mitchell Award in 1980 for the arrest of armed robber Gary Purdey, but this was tainted by Purdey’s allegations that Rogerson assaulted him and fabricated interview records.

Rogerson was also involved in the 1981 shooting death of Warren Lanfranchi, which was found to be in the line of duty but questioned by Lanfranchi’s partner and others as potentially being retribution for criminal activities.

Fellow police officer Michael Drury accused Rogerson of involvement in his attempted murder in 1984, alleging Rogerson offered him a bribe to tamper with evidence in a heroin trafficking trial. Rogerson was charged but acquitted of this crime. He also received a criminal conviction, later overturned on appeal, for involvement in drug dealing.
