Alex Guarnaschelli was born on June 20, 1969, in St. Louis, Missouri to cookbook editors, the late Maria Guarnaschelli, and John Guarnaschelli. She was the only child in her family. However, when she was just a few days old, her family moved to New York City.

Guarnaschelli’s love for food and cooking began at a young age while watching her mother test out various recipes as part of her job editing cookbooks. She went on to graduate from Horace Mann School in 1987 and then from Barnard College in 1991 with a degree in art history.

Alex Guarnaschelli worked for minimum wage in a restaurant, An American Place in 1991, for one year. However, her hard work and dedication paid off as she continued to gain valuable experience at various renowned restaurants such as Guy Savoy’s La Butte Chaillot and Daniel Boulud’s eponymous restaurant.
