Early Life And Education

Djibril Cissé is a former French professional footballer who was born on August 12, 1981, in Arles, France. He was raised by his parents, Mangué and Karidiata Cissé. He followed in his father’s footsteps, a prominent footballer and former captain of the Ivory Coast national team.

Sadly, Mangué Cissé passed away in 2009 after a prolonged illness.

Djibril is the youngest of seven siblings, including his brothers Aboubacar and Séni Cissé, who are both accomplished footballers. His other siblings are N’ma, Damaye, Abou, and Fode.

At the tender age of 13, Cissé embarked on his football journey by joining the youth academy of AJ Auxerre in 1996, after two years of sports studies in Nîmes. His exceptional talent earned him a place in the first team in 1998, marking the beginning of his illustrious professional career.

Despite his Ivorian and Guinean heritage, Cissé was raised as a Muslim. However, at 15, he embraced Catholicism after attending catechism classes at a training centre in Nîmes.

Career

Djibril Cissé, a French striker with a knack for goals, began his journey in 1989 at his hometown club AC Arles. His talent soon attracted the attention of Nîmes Olympique and AJ Auxerre, where he honed his skills in their youth academies.

At 15, Cissé signed with Auxerre, and by 1999, he was celebrating victory in the Coupe Gambardella with the youth team. Cissé’s impressive performance earned him a promotion to the senior squad under coach Guy Roux.

He made his Ligue 1 debut at the young age of 17, showcasing his potential on the big stage. Over the next few years, Cissé became a prolific scorer, bagging 70 goals in 128 league games for Auxerre.

This impressive record caught the eye of Liverpool, who signed him in 2004 for a hefty sum. Cissé‘s time at Anfield started brightly, but a devastating injury in October 2004 against Blackburn Rovers derailed his momentum.

Despite his setback, Cissé bounced back and played a crucial role in helping Liverpool win the 2004-05 Champions League and the 2005-06 FA Cup. However, rumours of a transfer swirled around Cissé, and in 2006, he moved to Olympique de Marseille.

Unfortunately, another injury during a pre-World Cup match marred his return to France. After recovering, Cissé spent loan spells at Sunderland and back at Marseille before signing with Panathinaikos in Greece in 2009.

Cissé‘s career continued with stints in Italy with Lazio and in England with Queens Park Rangers. He later played for clubs in Russia, France, Italy (again), and even the United States before taking a break in 2021. In 2023, he joined a Spanish seven-a-side team, showcasing his continued passion for the game.

Djibril Cissé‘s international career began in 2001 when he represented France at the FIFA World Youth Championship. His impressive performances, including a hat-trick against Iran and two goals against Germany, showcased his goal-scoring ability.

Cissé’s talent also earned him a spot on the France under-21 team, where he contributed to their qualification campaign for the 2004 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.

Cissé made his senior international debut for France in 2002, becoming a substitute against Belgium. He was selected for the 2002 FIFA World Cup squad but did not have a significant impact as France was eliminated in the group stage.

After a successful spell with Panathinaikos, Cissé received a call-up to the French national team in 2010. He was included in the squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, where he played in France’s final group-stage match against South Africa. In September 2021, Cissé took up a coaching position in the youth sector of former club Marseille.
