His parents emigrated from the Central African Republic to France, where Kurt was born. Kurt Zouma has two siblings: an older brother, Lionel, who plays as a defender for Bourg-en-Bresse, and a younger brother, Yoan, who is also a defender and is currently on loan from Havant & Waterlooville to Poole Town.
Kurt Zouma’s educational background has yet to be discovered, but he began his football journey at Vaulx-en-Velin at nine. He spent six years playing there before joining the Saint-Étienne Academy at 15. Kurt Zouma is of Black ethnicity with African roots, specifically from the Central African Republic, and he practices Islam as his religion.
Career
Kurt Zouma began his career at 9 with Vaulx-en-Velin, playing as a right winger and striker before transitioning to a defender. In 2009, he joined Saint-Étienne and signed his first professional contract in 2011.
He was promoted to the senior team that year and initially played without a name on his shirt to avoid media attention. In January 2014, Zouma joined Chelsea on a 5.5-year contract for around £12 million. He remained on loan at Saint-Étienne for the rest of the 2013-14 season before making his Chelsea debut in September 2014.
Zouma played 151 games for Chelsea in all competitions, scoring ten goals and winning several titles, including the UEFA Super Cup in 2021.
In August 2021, Zouma transferred to West Ham United for £29.8 million on a 4-year contract.
He made his West Ham debut in the Europa League in September 2021 and scored his first goal for the club in a 3-2 win over Liverpool in November 2021. Zouma was controversially named West Ham captain for that game despite criticism over an incident in which he was filmed kicking his pet cat.
In June 2024, with a year left on his contract, West Ham placed Zouma on the transfer list. Subsequently, a proposed move to Shabab Al-Ahli in the UAE collapsed after Zouma failed a medical.
Kurt Zouma has represented France at the youth international level, playing for the under-16 and under-17 teams. He was part of the French under-17 team that competed in the 2011 UEFA European Under-17 Championship and the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
Zouma has also been the captain of the French under-21 team. He was a member of the French under-20 squad that won the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey, where he scored a goal in the quarter-final match against Uzbekistan.
Zouma‘s strong performances at the youth levels caught the attention of France’s senior team manager, Didier Deschamps, who wanted to build the national team’s defence around Zouma and fellow young defender Raphaël Varane.
Zouma received his first call-up to the senior national team in March 2015 for friendlies against Brazil and Denmark. Zouma made his senior international debut for France on March 29, 2015, as a substitute in the final minutes of a 2-0 win over Denmark.
On June 11 2019, Zouma made his first start for the France senior team in a UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying match against Andorra. He played the full 90 minutes and scored his first goal for the national team in the 4-0 away victory.
