Sven-Göran Eriksson was a Swedish football player and manager born on February 5, 1948, in Sunne, Sweden. He was born to his parents, Sven Eriksson and Ulla Olsson.

Eriksson’s father worked as a bus conductor, while his mother worked in a textile store. He had a younger brother named Lars-Erik Eriksson, but details about his educational background are unknown. Eriksson was of Swedish ethnicity, though his religious affiliation is not publicly known.

Career

Eriksson made his debut for Swedish Division 4 team Torsby IF at the age of 16. After moving to Säffle to study economics, he switched clubs to SK Sifhälla. In 1972, he joined Swedish Division 2 team KB Karlskoga, where he also worked as a physical education teacher in Örebro.

Eriksson was heavily influenced by Karlskoga’s player-manager, Tord Grip, who favored the English style of play that Bob Houghton and Roy Hodgson had brought to Sweden. Eriksson retired from playing in 1975 at 27, having given up on his dream of becoming a professional footballer.

After retiring as a player, Eriksson was offered to become Tord Grip’s assistant at Degerfors IF. A year later, Grip was appointed assistant manager of the Sweden national team, and Eriksson became Degerfors’ manager. He led the team to the playoffs in 1977 and 1978, winning the latter and promotion to Swedish Football Division 2.
