Early Life
Joy Nunieh was groomed by her father; Late Sen. Cyrus Nunieh from Beeri, Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, following her birth on the 11th of November, 1963.
Her father, who passed on in 2018, is widely known in the Niger Delta region as the first lawyer in the entire Ogoni Land. The Late Sen. Cyrus Nunieh also served as a one-time Senate of the Rivers South-East Senatorial District.
Joy Nunieh also spent her entire childhood in Rivers State and enjoyed many endearments from highly ranked dignitaries in the state. Recently, Gov. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, Governor of Rivers State intervened following an invasion of her residence, after a backdrop of allegations made on scandals at the NDDC.
Education
Joy Nunieh finished her basic and primary education at a very young age. Due to her impressive level of brilliance, she was recommended by her teachers for a high-class secondary school. Her grades were also up to scratch after the release of the SSCE results at the time.
This made the former NDDC MD easily secure admission to study Law at Rivers State University of Science and Technology; obtaining her degree after the stipulated duration of the course.
Afterward, Joy Nunieh moved to Lagos and studied at the Nigerian Law School, before being called to Bar in 1990. However, she failed to serve in the NYSC; after being posted to Kwara State.
Career
Joy Nunieh worked as a private contractor for Chevron Nigeria Limited in 1989, before striking a deal in 2008 to work with Shell as an independent contractor. Her effectiveness and ability to manage the resources provided were her greatest strengths, along with decades of experience in the Oil and Gas industry.
She also contested for a senatorial position in 2011 under the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), but failed to win the election.
In 2012, Nunieh‘s profile was rewarded when she got appointed by the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP); working as the National Coordinator, with existing affiliation to Shell.
Joy Nunieh joined President Muhammadu Buhari‘s cabinet in 2019 after being assigned the role of Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). However, her time in office was cut short when she got sacked in April 2020 for skipping the Youth Service program.
Joy Nunieh’s Controversy
Not long after her replacement, Kemebradikumo Pondei, was announced, a list of allegations was released by berated Joy Nunieh, accusing Godswill Akpabio of trying to sexually harass her. She also claimed the ex-Governor had tried to cajole her into taking an oath of secrecy.
Joy Nunieh, who featured in numerous TV interviews at the time also revealed that the Commission’s headquarters was not connected to the public power supply due to an agreed supply of diesel by Godswill Akpabio‘s girlfriend.
She also accused the Minister of ordering the blow-up of pipelines in the Niger Delta region as well as misappropriation of billions of Naira within the Commission.

Aside from her official duties, Joy Nunieh leads a private life. She remained under the radar until scandals emerged in 2020, about the happenings in the NDDC.
She is currently addressed as ‘Miss’ Joy Nunieh, with much probability suggesting she is single. However, during her exchange of allegations with Godswill Akpabio, an ex-Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Akpabio revealed that she had been divorced four times, stating that Joy Nunieh had character issues.
