Benjamin Netanyahu‘s political journey commenced in 1988, as he secured a position in the Israeli parliament, known as the Knesset, representing the Likud party. Initially, he served as the deputy minister of foreign affairs from 1988 to 1991 and later became a deputy minister in Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir‘s coalition cabinet from 1991 to 1992. Following this, Netanyahu was elected as the leader of the Likud party in 1993, taking over from Shamir.

Netanyahu became the prime minister of Israel at age 46 after leading Likud to victory in the Knesset elections in 1996. During his initial term, the country experienced economic growth and a decline in terrorist attacks. Nonetheless, he faced scrutiny for his approach to the peace negotiations with Palestinians and his intimate ties with the United States.

Benjamin Netanyahu‘s loss in the 1999 election led him to become the opposition leader until 2002, when he joined Ariel Sharon‘s government as the finance minister.
