Ali Bongo Ondimba, Gabon’s overthrown president, was born on February 9, 1959, in Brazzaville, the Republic of Congo’s central city. Alain Bernard Bongo is his birth name.

Ali Bongo‘s father is Omar Bongo, a former president of Gabon and politician, while his mother is Patience Dabany, a former First Lady of Gabon.

Ali Bongo grew up with three siblings: Pascaline Bongo OndimbaAlbertine Amissa Bongo, and Frédéric Bongo Ondimba. From 1977 to 1981, Ali Bongo attended Panthéon-Sorbonne University in Paris, France.

Career

After being appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs by his father in 1989, Ali Bongo served in this capacity until 1991, when he transitioned to a new role as a member of the National Assembly. Later, in 1999, he was entrusted with the position of Minister of Defense.

Following his father’s passing in 2009, Bongo assumed the presidency through a highly contested election. In 2016, Ali Bongo was again re-elected despite differences during the voting process.

1996, the Higher Council of Islamic Affairs of Gabon (CSAIG) was established. During the parliamentary election that same year, Defense Minister Idriss Ngari‘s supporters challenged President Ali Bongo for the PDG nomination, but Bongo was able to win and keep his seat with the help of his influential political ally, his maternal uncle Jean-Boniface Assélé.

Following his election as a PDG candidate in Haut-Ogooué Province, Ali Bongo became a member of the National Assembly in December 2001. He further solidified his position within the party by being elected vice president during the PDG’s Eighth Ordinary Congress in July 2003. 

Ali Bongo then played a crucial role in his father’s re-election campaign during the 2005 presidential election, serving as Coordinator-General of Youth. In recognition of his efforts, he was promoted to Minister of State on January 21, 2006, while continuing to hold the defense portfolio.

According to military officers, Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba was placed under house arrest on August 30, 2023, while one of his sons was detained on “treason.” This development came short after the military officers announced that they had successfully overthrown the government of Gabon.
