Stephen Grover Cleveland was born on March 18, 1837, in Caldwell, New Jersey, United States. He was the son of Reverend Richard Falley Cleveland, a Presbyterian minister, and Ann Cleveland.
He had several siblings: Anna Neal Cleveland Hastings, William Neal Cleveland, Mary Allen Cleveland Hoyt, Richard Cecil Cleveland, Margaret Louise Falley Cleveland, Lewis Frederick Cleveland, Susan Sophia Cleveland Yeomans, and Rose Elizabeth Cleveland.
Cleveland received his elementary education at the Fayetteville Academy and the Clinton Liberal Academy. Following his father’s death in 1853, he left school to support his family. He was of English ethnicity, and regarding his religion, he joined the Presbyterian Church around 1878.

Career
Grover Cleveland’s distinguished career commenced in law after he successfully passed the New York bar exam in 1859, following a dedicated legal studies and clerking period. He served in a law firm for three years before venturing out to establish his practice in 1862.
In January 1863, Cleveland was appointed as the assistant district attorney of Erie County, New York, where he built a reputation as a diligent and committed lawyer. Cleveland’s entry into politics occurred in 1870 when he was elected sheriff of Erie County.
Despite his initial reluctance to engage in partisan politics, he accepted the nomination for mayor of Buffalo in 1881. During his tenure as mayor, Cleveland became renowned for his efforts to combat corruption and graft within municipal services, vetoing unnecessary expenditures and advocating for hard work and efficiency.
His accomplishments as mayor paved the way for his nomination and subsequent election as Governor of New York in 1882. As governor, Cleveland maintained his commitment to fighting corruption and opposing legislation that favored special interests, taking a stand against Tammany Hall, a notorious political machine in New York City.
His reputation as a reformer and political outsider earned him the Democratic Party’s nomination for president in 1884. Cleveland’s victory in the presidential election marked a significant milestone, as he became the first Democrat to be elected president following the Civil War.
