He grew up in a large family with four siblings: Hester Brandreth, Jennifer Woolfenden, Virginia Allkins, and Benjamin Lance Brandreth.

Brandreth spent most of his childhood in London, where he attended the Lycée Français in South Kensington and Bedales School in Petersfield, Hampshire.
