After graduating from Independence High School in 1901, Truman attended Spalding’s Commercial College, a business school in Kansas City, where he studied bookkeeping, shorthand, and typing, though he left after a year. Career
Harry S. Truman’s career spanned several roles before he became president. He worked various jobs, including in a mailroom, as a timekeeper, and as a bookkeeper for his family’s farm. Truman also worked as a bank clerk alongside his brother, Vivian.
From 1906 until he enlisted in the army in 1917, he managed the Grandview farm. Despite these diverse experiences, Truman is the only president since William McKinley who did not hold a college degree, showcasing his rise through hard work and determination rather than formal higher education.
Truman’s military service played a crucial role in shaping his leadership qualities. He enlisted in the Missouri National Guard in 1905 and eventually achieved the rank of corporal. When the U.S. entered World War I in 1917, he rejoined his National Guard unit and became part of the 129th Artillery Regiment.
Truman quickly ascended to the rank of captain, where he led the regiment’s canteen and proved his ability to manage and lead effectively under pressure. His military experience bolstered his self-confidence and revealed his leadership potential, which would serve him well in his political career.
In 1922, with the support of the Pendergast political machine, Truman launched his political career by successfully running for county judge. He briefly pursued night courses at the Kansas City Law School between 1923 and 1925 but dropped out after losing his reelection bid as county judge.
Truman’s persistence paid off. He went on to serve as a U.S. Senator before being elected Vice President. In 1945, he ascended to the presidency following Franklin D. Roosevelt’s death, where he would lead the country through some of its most defining moments in history.
