Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida was born on August 17, 1941, in Minna, Niger State, Nigeria.

He is the son of Muhammad Badamasi Babangida and Aisha Babangida. As the eldest of six children, he experienced significant family loss, with only his sister, Hannatu, surviving alongside him while four of his siblings passed away in infancy.
