Ilhan Abdullahi Omar is a Somali-American politician who has been serving as the U.S. representative for Minnesota’s 5th congressional district since 2019.

She is a member of the Democratic Party and is known for being the first Somali-American, the first naturalized citizen from Africa, and one of the first two Muslim women (along with Rashida Tlaib) to serve in the United States Congress.

Ilhan Abdullahi Omar was born on 4 October 1982 in Mogadishu, Somalia. She was raised by her parents Nur Omar Mohamed and Fadhuma Abukar Haji Hussein, and she was the youngest of seven siblings, including sister Sahra Noor.

However, the names of her remaining five siblings are unknown. Omar attended Thomas Edison High School, where she graduated in 2001 and was a student organizer.

She went on to graduate from North Dakota State University in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in political science and international studies. Additionally, Omar was a Policy Fellow at the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs.
