His father, who had died, had been a soldier in the United States Army. He grew up on the streets of Rockaway, New Jersey, with his younger sister Ellen Wayne Tiedrich, and loved music and instruments.

He attended a local school in the United States for his elementary schooling. In addition, he attended Morris Hills High School in Rockaway with his younger sister, Ellen.

Teidrich earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from New York’s Parsons School of Design.
