James Daniel Jordan is an American politician who has served as the U.S. Representative for Ohio’s 4th congressional district since 2007. He is a member of the Republican Party.

Before his political career, Jordan was a collegiate wrestler and college wrestling coach. He had a successful wrestling career, competing at the collegiate level.

Early Life And Education

James Daniel Jordan was born on February 17 February 17, 1964, in Troy, Ohio, United States. He is the son of Shirley and John Jordan and has one sibling, Jeff Jordan. Jordan was raised in Champaign County, Ohio.

He attended Graham High School, where he was a highly successful wrestler. He won state championships all four years and compiled a 156–1 win-loss record.

After high school, Jordan enrolled at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he became a two-time NCAA Division I wrestling champion. Jordan graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1986 with a bachelor’s degree in economics.

He earned a master’s degree in education from Ohio State University and a Doctorate from the Capital University Law School in 2001, though he reportedly never took the bar examination. Jordan is of white ethnicity and practiced Christianity as his religion.

Career

Jim Jordan started his career as a collegiate wrestler and wrestling coach. He was an assistant coach with Ohio State University’s wrestling program from 1987 to 1995. Jordan was a two-time NCAA national champion wrestler and a former college wrestling coach.

Jordan was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in November 1994 and served three terms in the 85th Ohio House district. He then went on to represent Ohio’s 4th congressional district, which includes Lima, Mansfield, Marysville, Marion, and parts of Columbus.

During his time in Congress, Jordan has been a prominent critic of former Speaker of the House John Boehner, who resigned under pressure from the conservative Freedom Caucus in 2015.

Jordan was the ranking member of the House Oversight Committee from 2019 to 2020 before becoming the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, which he became chair of in 2023.

Jordan is considered a close ally of former president Donald Trump. During Trump‘s presidency, Jordan sought to discredit investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election and staged a sit-in to prevent a Trump impeachment inquiry hearing.

After the 2020 election, Jordan supported lawsuits to challenge the results and voted not to certify the Electoral College results. Though Jordan opposed Kevin McCarthy‘s bid to succeed Boehner as speaker in 2015, he later became one of McCarthy’s closest allies.
