At 69, JohnHoward Tory was born on May 28, 1954, in Toronto, Ontario, to John A. Tory and Elizabeth Bacon. He grew up in Toronto, alongside his two brothers, Jeffery and Michael and one sister, Jennifer.

Tory attended the University of Toronto Schools, a publicly-funded high school affiliated with the University of Toronto.

He then pursued higher education at Trinity College at the University of Toronto, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1975.

Tory attended Osgoode Hall Law School of York University, graduating with a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1978. He was called to the bar in Ontario in 1980.

Career

After completing his education, John Tory began his career as a lawyer, political strategist, and businessman. He was a journalist for Toronto radio stations CFTR and CHFI in the 1970s before joining the law firm Tory, Tory, DesLauriers & Binnington.

He served in the of the premier of Ontario as principal secretary to the premier and associate secretary of the cabinet.

Tory also held various roles in the Canadian federal government, including serving as a campaign chairman for then Prime Minister Brian Mulroney.

In the late 1990s, Tory worked in senior positions at Rogers Communications, one of Canada’s largest publishing and broadcasting companies.

He later became the CEO of Rogers subsidiary Rogers Cable. Tory’s career also involved serving as the ninth commissioner of the Canadian Football League from 1996 to 2000.

Tory’s political career gained momentum when he ran for mayor of Toronto in the 2003 municipal election. Although he did not win, he went on to become the leader of the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party from 2004 to 2009.

He also served as the leader of the Official Opposition in Ontario from 2005 to 2007. After leaving politics, Tory became a radio talk show host on CFRB and served as the volunteer chair of the non-profit group CivicAction.
