Biography

Celebrated Nigerian politician and banker Kashim Shettima Mustapha was born on September 2, 1966. As of 2019, he has represented Borno Central in the Senate. From 2011 to 2019, he presided as the governor of Borno State. 

He is a member of the All Progressives Congress and will run as Bola Tinubu‘s running mate in the 2023 presidential election. Kashim Shettima earned degrees from the Universities of Maiduguri and Ibadan. 

Following his education, he entered the banking industry and eventually rose to hold several senior executive roles at banks. He assumed management of Zenith Bank’s Maiduguri office around the middle of the 2000s, but she left that job in 2007 to join Governor Ali Modu Sheriff‘s state cabinet.

After serving in the cabinet for four years, Kashim Shettima was elected governor in 2011 and re-elected with a larger margin in 2015. The deadly Boko Haram insurgency dominated his term in office. Later, he won a senatorial election. He was renominated for the Senate in 2023; however, he declined the candidacy to support Bola Tinubu. He was succeeded as the Senate nominee by Kaka Shehu Lawan

Early Life & Education

Alhaji Kashim Shettima was born on September 2, 1966, in Shettimari, Maiduguri, Borno State, to the family of Alhaji Shettima Mustafa Kuttayibe.

He completed his secondary education in 1983 at the Government Science Secondary School, Potiskum (now in neighboring Yobe State), after attending Lamisula Primary School in Maiduguri from 1972 to 1978. From 1978-1980, he continued at Government Community Secondary School.

In 1989, Kashim Shettima graduated from the University of Maiduguri with a BSc in Agricultural Economics. Furthermore, in 1991, he obtained his master’s at the University of Ibadan in Southwest Nigeria.

Between 1991 and 1993, Kashim Shettima worked as a lecturer in the department of agricultural economics at the University of Maiduguri

Career

Kashim Shettima entered the banking industry in 1993, working as head of the accounts unit for the (now-defunct) Commercial Bank of Africa Limited in Ikeja, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria. He served there between 1993 and 1997. He joined the African International Bank Limited in 1997 as a Deputy Manager and advanced to the position of Manager in 2001. He transferred to Zenith Bank in 2001 and is now the manager of Maiduguri’s main branch.

He progressed through the bank’s ranks to become Senior Manager/Branch Head, Assistant General Manager (AGM)/Zonal Head (North-East), and Deputy General Manager/Zonal Head before departing as a General Manager in 2007 after being appointed Commissioner for Finance in Borno State (North-East).

Kashim Shettima was an agricultural economist at the Commercial Bank of Africa’s Ikeja office in Lagos State (1993-1997). He later worked as a branch head and deputy manager at the African International Bank Limited’s Kaduna branch (1997–2001). In 2001, he was named branch head and deputy manager of the Zenith Bank’s Maiduguri office. 

Fiver years later, Kashim Shettima was congratulated as the general manager. In the middle of 2007, he was named Commissioner of the Borno State Ministry of Finance and Economic Development as an achievement of his political career.

He was thereafter named Commissioner in the Ministries of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Education, Agriculture, and later Health under his predecessor as governor of Borno, Ali Modu Sheriff. From 2007 to 2011, Kashim Shettima served as a Commissioner for 5 Ministries. 

Later, assailants assassinated Modu Fannami Gubio, and Kashim Shettima won a second primary vote in February 2011. On April 26, 2011, he defeated Mohammed Goni of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with 531,147 votes, while Goni garnered 450,140 votes. He received several leadership awards in 2014 and 2015 from the Nigeria Union of Journalists, a national organization, then in 2016, he won an award from Tell magazine. 

Kashim Shettima also received the Zik Prize for Leadership, Kaduna NUJ Award for Courage and Exceptional Leadership (2017), and FCT NUJ Merit Award for Exceptional Leadership (2017). After winning the Borno Central Senatorial District election in February 2019, he took the place of Senator Kaka Bashir Garbai.

Kashim Shettima is a married man who married Nana Shettima, and they are blessed with three children: Armir Shettima, Fatima Shettima, and Amira Shettima
