Early Life and Education

Linda Jean Burney was born on 25 April 1957 in Whitton, Australia. She was raised by her father, Nonny Ingram, but the name of her mother is unknown to the media. She grew up with two siblings, Nina and Billy Laing.

Burney attended the local primary school in Whitton and continued her education at Leeton High School for the first four years of secondary school. She then transferred to Penrith High School for her final two years.

Burney made history as one of the first Aboriginal students to graduate from the Mitchell College of Advanced Education (now known as Charles Sturt University), where she obtained a Diploma in Teaching in 1978. In 2002, she received an Honorary Doctorate in Education from Charles Sturt University.

Career

Linda Jean Burney began her career as a teacher at Lethbridge Park Public School in western Sydney in 1979. After that, she joined the Aboriginal Education Unit (Policy) of the NSW Department of Education from 1981 to 1983.

During her time there, she was actively involved in the New South Wales Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (NSW AECG) from 1983 to 1998, where she played a key role in developing and implementing the first Aboriginal education policy in Australia.

In recognition of her dedication and leadership, she was elected president of AECG in 1988.
