In 2014, he earned a B.Sc. in International Relations at Espan Formation University in the Benin Republic, where he also studied part-time.

He studied at the College of Vocational Science and Technology, where he graduated in 2012 with a diploma.

Career

Before becoming governor, he served as the All Progressives Congress’s (APC) national secretary.

After completing his school education, Mai Mala Buni began his profession in the trade and transportation industry.

Mala’s political career began in 1992 when he ran for and was elected councilor for the Buni ward in the Gujba Local Government Council on the platform of the National Republican Convention (NRC) party.

He was later chosen as the council’s speaker.

He was appointed a member of the governing board of the University of Uyo in 2004 after being designated a senior legislative assistant in Nigeria’s National Assembly in 2002.

He was unanimously chosen as Chairman of the Yobe state’s Advanced Congress of Democrats in 2006.

Buni Mai Mala joined the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), which was in power at the time, in Yobe state in 2011 and was later named the governor of Yobe’s special adviser on political and legislative matters, Ibrahim Gaidam.

Mai Mala Buni was elected the first state chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Yobe State after becoming the party’s state secretary in Yobe state in 2013.

In 2014, Mai Mala Buni was chosen as the APC’s first-ever National Secretary.

He was nominated, endorsed, and chosen as the APC’s candidate for governor of Yobe State in the 2019 election while still serving as the party’s national secretary and board chairman of the Nigeria Shippers Council.

Hon. Mai Mala defeated Alhaji Bello Iliya of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to become the fourth executive governor of Yobe State during the 2019 general elections.
