Early Life And Education
Marco Antonio Rubio was born on May 28, 1971, in Miami, Florida, as the second son and third child of Mario Rubio Reina and Oriales (née García) Rubio. His parents immigrated to the United States from Cuba in 1956, during the regime of Fulgencio Batista.
Rubio has three siblings: an older brother named Mario, an older sister named Barbara (who is married to Orlando Cicilia), and a younger sister named Veronica. He graduated from South Miami Senior High School in 1989.
Rubio’s educational journey began with a football scholarship at Tarkio College in Missouri, where he studied for one year before transferring to Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, Florida. He later attended the University of Florida, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in 1993.
Rubio then pursued legal studies at the University of Miami School of Law, graduating cum laude with a Juris Doctor degree in 1996. During his time in law school, he accumulated $100,000 in student loans, which he successfully paid off by 2012. Raised in a Cuban-American household with strong Roman Catholic values.
Career
Marco Rubio began his political career in the 1990s, serving as a city commissioner for West Miami. In 2000, he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives, where he represented the 111th district.
His rise within state politics continued, and in November 2006, Rubio became the Speaker of the Florida House, a role he held for two years. After leaving the Florida legislature in 2008, he taught at Florida International University, further cementing his reputation as a prominent figure in Florida politics.
In 2010, Rubio made the leap to national politics when he was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he served from 2011 to 2025. During his time in the Senate, Rubio became widely known for his influence on U.S. foreign policy, particularly in Latin America, where he was described as a “virtual secretary of state” during the first Trump administration.
He also earned a reputation as one of Congress’s most hawkish members regarding China. In 2016, after suspending his presidential campaign following a loss to Donald Trump in the Florida Republican primary, Rubio chose to run for re-election to the Senate and secured a second term.
In November 2024, President-elect Donald Trump nominated Rubio to serve as U.S. Secretary of State in his second administration. The Senate confirmed his nomination by a unanimous vote of 99-0, and Rubio was sworn in on January 21, 2025, becoming the first Latino to hold the position.
Upon taking office, he emphasized that U.S. interests would be the department’s priority. However, his early tenure has been met with criticism, particularly regarding his lack of action to protect the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), despite having been a strong advocate for the agency during his Senate tenure.
